The Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, announced in an interview with the program Bom Dia, Minister, the creation of the Sports Betting Secretariat. The secretariat will be established in July and will monitor issues related to sports betting within the ministry.
Minister of Sports, André Fufuca explained: “We will have a sports betting secretariat”. The authority is being planned through a restructuring with the Civil House.
According to the person responsible for the department, the authority will promote actions focused on sporting integrity. “We will have actions aimed at the issue of sporting integrity. Integrity that will accompany the entire sporting issue and also that of betting.”
The new secretariat appears in a context where the sports betting law, sanctioned in December last year, taxes online betting (Law nº 14,790/2023). The resources generated by this taxation will be allocated to health, education and public safety.
This week, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) revealed recent data showing a significant drop of 67% in games suspected of manipulation, comparing January to June 2023 with the same period in 2024. Thus, the number of suspicious matches decreased by 70 to 23.
When only the games under the CBF’s jurisdiction were analyzed, the reduction was even more drastic, reaching 92.8%, going from 14 to just one suspected case.
Casinos and bingos can also be released in Brazil
Furthermore, on the 19th, the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate approved Bill No. 2234/2022. This project authorizes the operation of bingos and casinos, in addition to regulating betting games, such as Jogo do Bicho, and betting on horse races in the country.
Now, the proposal goes to the Senate Plenary for analysis. According to the president of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco, the matter should be debated in the next semester.
“There’s no need to rush into this. We can vote perfectly well after the recess. But it will be voted on, because, having passed through the Chamber, through the Senate’s CCJ, there is a pre-disposition from the Executive that we have to measure for the vote,” he said.
