From January 1, 2025, betting websites in Brazil must require self-declaration of income from users. Additionally, time control will be implemented to prevent players from spending excessive hours betting.
The objective of these measures is to prevent bettors from committing a significant part of their income to gaming and to curb fraud.
Initially, the sites will ask players to self-declare their income without the need for proof. This way, it will be possible to monitor how much of the bets represent the players’ personal income.
“The government can make control more rigorous, requiring supporting documentation if necessary,” said a technician from the Ministry of Finance.
Additionally, there will be a maximum game time alert. If a user exceeds this limit, the site will prevent them from continuing to bet.
Betting sites will need to implement identity authentication through facial recognition. This measure aims to prevent the use of “laundering companies” for money laundering.
According to the Ministry of Finance, “the correct identification of the bettor should prevent fraud and promote greater security”.
New domain and regulation of betting in Brazil
Another measure to inhibit the illegal market is the obligation for websites to be hosted on the bet.br domain, created by the government. “The creation of the domain aims to facilitate the identification and control of platforms”, highlighted a technician from the Ministry of Finance.
This requirement is part of the new regulation rules for the sector, established by a law sanctioned at the end of last year. The request for authorization to operate in the Brazilian market is now available, and companies that make the request by August will have a response by November.
From January 1, 2025, only websites hosted on the bet.br domain will be regularized.
Limits on advertising and other regulations
So far, the government has published four ordinances with rules regulating online betting law in Brazil.
There are still seven remaining, which will detail protection mechanisms against money laundering, rules for responsible gaming, and companies’ rights and obligations. One of the future ordinances will provide more details about the limits on advertising.
Furthermore, any amount won from bets will be automatically deposited into the individual bank account registered on the website. If the bookmaker loses, payment to the player must be made within 120 minutes.
Finally, these new regulations seek to make the betting market safer and more transparent for everyone involved, in addition to curbing illegal practices and protecting consumers.
