Júlio Arcoverde defends reformulation of sports betting to mitigate cases of match fixing (1)

This Tuesday (20), federal deputy Júlio Arcoverde (PP-PI), president of the sports betting CPI, expressed his support for the implementation of a new model for the sector. The politician defends that the bets be reformulated, excluding additional elements of the game, such as corners, cards, penalties, among others. This measure aims to reduce the possibility of manipulation of results.

“The model adopted in France, I think it can be adopted in Brazil, with the creation of a regulatory agency. There, it is forbidden to bet on football accessories, such as corners, penalties, yellow cards, laterals, etc. You bet on the result of the first half , in the second half and in the final result. I think that you already get a lot out of manipulation”, said Arcoverde to the “ge” portal.

According to deputy Júlio Arcoverde, the responsibilities of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) go beyond imposing punishments. He emphasizes the importance of developing regulatory projects and strengthening the supervision of betting in Brazil.

The objective is to establish clear and effective guidelines for the sector, guaranteeing the integrity of betting activities and protecting the interests of bettors and society as a whole.

“The CPI has to be based on punishment, but also propositional. That parallel to the CPI, we can prepare a bill to make a regulation together with the Ministry of Finance. I can mention France, which has a regulatory agency for betting There are several proposals, we are studying what is happening in the world, because it is not a problem only in Brazil”, added the politician.

Sports betting CPI started after denunciation by the Public Ministry of Goiás

The sports betting CPI, chaired by Júlio Arcoverde (PP-PI) and with rapporteur by Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), gained prominence amid the discussion on the subject due to a recent event. The Public Ministry of Goiás (MPGO) denounced 16 individuals for alleged interference in the results of 13 football matches.

These cases involve matches from Serie A and B of last year’s Brazilian Championship, as well as state competitions this year. As a result, several players were removed from their clubs on suspicion of participating in the betting-related scheme. These events highlight the importance of proper investigation and regulation in the sports betting industry.
