Justice Department Minister of State James Browne has announced new legislation and a new regulator to guide Ireland’s gambling industry.

As leis atuais foram descritas como “ultrapassadas” e “incoerentes”, especialmente desde que algumas delas remontam à década de 1930.

Gambling service providers who violate the rules introduced by the state’s new gambling regulator can be fined up to 20 million euros or 10% of their revenue.

Free bets and  incentives will be banned and a new code around gambling advertising should be introduced.

Under the new laws, the regulator now has the power to suspend or revoke any provider’s license and to administer financial sanctions.

The regulator will also gain the ability to block remote or online access to a provider’s service in the country, or to completely shut down certain transactions, along with the ability to block or freeze bank accounts, assets and payments.

Along with its approach to game sponsorship, the new authority will have the power to regulate the game in all forms of media.

The new code around game advertising will establish the times and frequency at which game ads can appear daily on television, radio and other media platforms.

In addition, there will be prohibitions on offering credit, or credit facilities, to players and the use of credit cards will be banned.

The Justice Department Minister of State argued the importance of designating a CEO for the new authority and mentioned that the position would be filled by Christmas: “The goal of having a designated CEO help, guide and establish the new authority, so that , when the legislation is approved, both are in tune”.
