Great athletes and clubs in Spain will no longer be able to promote gambling and betting brands. Consumer Minister Alberto Garzón argued that the measure is based on the fact that 40% of new Spanish players are between 18 and 25 years old.
Royal Decree 958/2020 on Commercial Communications for Gambling Activities stipulates progressive implementation. Although the signing of new sponsorship agreements between clubs and gaming companies was prohibited when the regulation was approved, in November, for the remaining items, an adaptation period was defined that will end in August.
One of its main points is the ban on the appearance of celebrities in advertisements. This change will take effect on April 1. From that day on, great athletes like Rafael Nadal, Gerard Piqué, Ronaldo or Neymar will no longer be able to promote brands of games and bets.
While on May 1st, depository bonds will be prohibited. They can only be offered to registered and verified customers, and never to people who show problematic behavior with the game.
Therefore, advertising of games on the Internet will be restricted to the portals of companies in the sector. Nor can this type of advertising be done by email, unless you have the express consent of the interested party.
Restrictive measures come into force at the end of the Spanish sports season
Coinciding with the end of the current sports season and the start of the 21-22 season, game announcements will end on September 1, both on television and radio, outside of 1 am to 5 am. No matter how long they last, current sports sponsorships also end on this date.
Garzón said: “The purpose of the decree is to order, regulate or scale the advertising of a sector, the gaming sector, which increasingly sends its messages to the youngest to whom it offers a leisure model based exclusively on the game, without taking taking into account that gambling can lead to an addiction that leads to the destruction of entire families ”.
