The Board of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced a 3.9% increase in participant fees, effective from 2025. The proceeds will fund technological improvements to horse racing days and administrative processes.
Technology and cybersecurity in horse racing
The increase in rates aims to ensure progress in essential services, including protection against cyber risks and strengthening regulatory functions.
“A decision to increase rates is never something we take lightly. We recognize this has an impact on individuals and businesses across our industry, those who own, train, ride and care for our horses and play an invaluable role in our collective success,” said a BHA spokesperson.
The spokesperson also acknowledged the challenges faced by those involved in the sport: “We know you are also facing rising costs and external pressures, and we are immensely grateful for your continued support of British racing.”
Support for horse owners and return in prizes
The loyalty of horse owners was highlighted as essential to the maintenance of the sport. According to the spokesperson, “We are especially grateful to the racehorse owners, who continue to show unwavering loyalty despite a challenging economic period. Our sport would not be possible without your significant contribution.”
BHA reinforced its commitment to valuing these participants, promising improvements in the owners’ experience and greater financial returns through the prizes.
News: Racing Digital Hub and online education
In an action that seeks to simplify processes, BHA announced the launch of the Racing Digital Hub. This platform promises to streamline administrative routines for owners and trainers. Additionally, it will transparently detail how they will use horse racing fees.
Furthermore, they recently introduced an online educational portal, with modules that cover various topics such as:
- Protection and Human Wellbeing
- Anti-Sexual Harassment and Misogyny
- Promoting safer and more inclusive sport
But it’s important to remember that the current fees paid by jockeys and trainers also fund charities related to racing and horse rehabilitation. This commitment reinforces the social role of sport and increases its relevance in the British sporting scene.
Therefore, the increase in fees worries participants, but the BHA guarantees that the return will reflect a more efficient structure and significant advances for the sport.
