At the CBC & Clubes Expo event, held in Campinas (SP), José Francisco Manssur, partner at CSMV Advogados and one of those responsible for drafting the rules for betting in Brazil, highlighted the presence of bets as sponsors of football.
During his lecture, Manssur stated: “Football has already gone through the phase of sponsorships from banks, cars, drinks and many others. Today, betting is the new reality of Brazilian football and we need to accept that.”
According to data presented by Manssur, the online betting sector grew 734.6% globally between 2021 and 2024, moving R$6 billion, equivalent to 1% of Brazilian GDP.
Today, all clubs in the Brazilian Championship Series A have betting sponsorships. “This euphoric moment should calm down in the coming months,” warned Manssur.
José Manssur explained that, after the regulation, the number of CNPJs fell to 90, each with the right to three brands. “The real problem is not betting, but rather gambling addiction and debt, which should decrease with more explicit advertising and control mechanisms,” he concluded.
Regulation and future challenges
The regulation of the betting sector in Brazil was one of the main topics of the event. Therefore, Manssur highlighted that the measure brought more control and transparency to the market. “Regulation was a fundamental step towards organizing the sector and ensuring consumer safety,” he stated.
However, he warned of the need to continue monitoring the social and economic impacts of gambling, especially in relation to gambling addiction and debt.
