Gustavo Guimarães, SECAP secretary, projects approval of the regulation in Brazil

In the first days of December, the sports betting industry was able to gather for the first face-to-face event in Brazil since the beginning of the pandemic. With panels and exhibitions, the Brazilian iGaming Summit, BiS 2021, was attended by Gustavo José de Guimarães e Souza (Secretary of Evaluation, Planning, Energy and Lottery at the Ministry of Economy).

The SECAP secretary gave the first lecture at the event on the ‘Positive Impact of the Gaming Sector on the Brazilian Economy’ and pointed out that the country has a lot of room for growth as it faces a ‘great window of opportunity’ with the regulation of gambling and creating recipes from new strands of games.

Gustavo Guimarães took over at SECAP in the first half of this year. He is a career servant at the Central Bank (BC) and an economist graduated from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), with a master’s degree in Economics from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Brasília (UnB), with doctoral internship at Columbia University.

Before assuming this role at SECAP, I was working as deputy secretary of the Special Secretariat of Finance. He is also a professor of the Master’s course in Economics at the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development and Research (IDP). And, during his participation in BiS 2021, the secretary granted an exclusive interview to the iGaming Brazil portal:
