Recently, the Colombian Congress granted eSports the same legal status as traditional sports, thus officially integrating the sport into the National Sports System. This follows the approval of Law 2507.

This legislative milestone represents formal recognition of the economic, cultural, and social relevance of competitive esports and paves the way for a more structured development of the sector in the country.

The new law defines eSports as competitions, whether amateur or professional, based on video games and developed through devices such as consoles, computers or cell phones.

Furthermore, it establishes that competitions must guarantee equal conditions, expressly prohibiting “pay-to-win” mechanisms that may give advantages to players.

One of the central pillars of Law 2507 is the incorporation of eSports into public sports policies. The Ministry of Sports, together with other state entities, must update the current regulations.

Law allows creation of eSports federations and leagues in Colombia

This change will make it possible to create federations, leagues, clubs, and formal competitive structures, all within a maximum of 12 months. This process will involve the participation of industry, academia, experts, and civil society. All of this will aim to harmonize regulations with the specificities of the sport.

Therefore, the law introduces measures for territorial development and equitable access, with special attention to rural communities and vulnerable groups. Among the planned actions is the creation of community centers equipped for eSports.

In addition to promoting the technological infrastructure necessary for its development, another important point is that the text guarantees that resources allocated to eSports will not affect the budgets of traditional sports.

Player protection is also a concern of the law

Player protection is another pillar of the law. Guidelines are established to promote the physical and mental health of video game players. Measures include personalized physical training programs, as well as rules to prevent addiction and other disorders associated with intensive gaming.

The law also establishes the need to regulate the minimum age for competition, event supervision, and digital security, with special attention to children and adolescents.

In the economic and technological sphere, Law 2507 promotes collaboration with the Ministries of Culture, Education, and Information Technology. The goal is to foster the development of video games, hardware, software, and related ventures.

The law also provides for partnerships with international organizations, including the Olympic and Paralympic movements, to position Colombia on the global competitive map.

This recognition represents an unprecedented opportunity for eSports in Colombia, as it allows the sport to transition from informality to a solid and sustainable professional ecosystem.
