Since colonial times, the culture of gambling and betting has been rooted in Brazil. Whether in gambling, sports betting or even informal games between friends, Brazilians have always had a strong inclination to take risks and try their luck. However, this reality is still rejected by some sectors of society.
Betting has always been part of the Brazilian soul
The practice of gambling in Brazil dates back to the colonial period, when the Portuguese brought with them games such as cards and dice. Over the centuries, this tradition has strengthened and diversified, with the emergence of new games and betting modalities.
In recent years, sports betting has gained more and more fans in Brazil. With the legalization and regulation of this market, many Brazilians have found a way to add fun to their favorite sports.
Denial of reality and the need to break taboos
Despite the evident presence of the betting culture in Brazil, some sectors of society are still reluctant to accept this reality. Often, this denial is motivated by moral or religious prejudices, or even a lack of understanding about the nature and impacts of betting.
The media plays a significant role in this debate, often highlighting both the positive aspects, such as the generation of revenue and jobs, and the negative aspects, such as the increase in gaming addiction and the financial impacts on the most vulnerable classes. This coverage, although informative, can perpetuate stigmas and misinformation, making it difficult to have a more balanced dialogue about the regulation and social effects of betting in the country.
However, it is important to recognize that gambling and betting is not, in itself, negative. What matters is how this activity is carried out. Responsible gambling, with defined limits and respect for laws and regulations, can be a healthy form of entertainment and fun.
The confusion between reputable companies and scams
Despite efforts to professionalize the industry, unfortunately they still insist on confusing reputable companies with frauds. This negative perception can be attributed to cases of scams and unfair practices that, although they are exceptions, tarnish the image of the sector as a whole. The lack of information and distrust regarding new financial practices contribute to this confusion.
The new legislation establishes strict criteria for the operation of companies, including the need to have headquarters in Brazil and a customer service channel. Furthermore, companies must adopt policies to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, as well as guarantee the integrity of bets and prevent match-fixing.
Currently, the Ministry of Treasury is analyzing 113 requests for regulation from companies that wish to operate in the betting market. Of these, 66% are from companies that were opened after the new law, reflecting a movement towards the formalization of the sector. This regulation is seen as an opportunity to increase tax collection and ensure that betting is carried out in a responsible and transparent manner.
In short, the betting culture is deeply rooted in Brazil, and recent regulation represents an opportunity to transform this practice into a legitimate and safe activity. However, it is essential that society recognizes the difference between serious companies and frauds, promoting a responsible gaming environment. Acceptance of this reality can lead to a healthier and more transparent market, benefiting both bettors and the country’s economy.
