MGM Resorts to start building integrated casino in Osaka in 2024

MGM Resorts intends to start construction on its resort with integrated casino in Osaka, Japan, by the end of next year.

MGM President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle announced the news.

The announcement comes after the company signed a licensing agreement with Marriott International last week. Thus, the objective is to attract visitors to its operations in Las Vegas, in the United States.

In a recent interview, Hornbuckle said the group hopes to sign the implementation agreement for its casino resort in Osaka soon.

“It has been a 12-year journey. We look forward to signing off on our area development plan soon and starting serious work on the ground,” said Bill Hornbuckle.

“Hopefully by the middle of next year we will have the pillars and start construction. We are projecting an opening in 2030”, added the CEO of MGM Resorts.

The executive also confirmed that the property will be built on reclaimed land, Yumeshima Island. “Originally built for competition in the 1972 Olympics and has been there ever since.”

Additionally, Hornbuckle noted that the site is slated to host the World Expo in 2025. “So a lot of the infrastructure and some of the other things that we need for tourism will be applied.”

Japanese legislation

Japan previously banned casinos and other forms of private gambling. An integrated resort (IR) law passed in 2018 made an exception for casino games like poker or baccarat at places authorized by the government to attract tourists.

Japan’s wealthiest 126 million residents and proximity to wealthy players in Asia make it a valuable market for casino owners. Although surveys reveal that many are concerned about excessive gambling.
