As long as Scotland remains in phase 3 of easing, Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that bingo halls, gambling halls and casinos will be allowed to reopen on August 24, but subject to strict guidelines and appropriate security measures.

The announcement follows the reopening of casinos in England on August 15. After all, the UK’s 125 casinos employ around 14,000 people and contribute £ 300 million a year to the Treasury in taxes.

“The rates remain at low levels in Scotland, but we are also seeing more positive cases than three weeks ago,” said Sturgeon.

He added: “I hope that the reopening of some services is welcome. Because we know that it is essential to reduce the economic damage that this virus is causing. But I ask that people also understand that, when trying to open services, we must still take firm action when the rules and guidelines are not being followed ”

According to the new legislation, local authorities can act in specific situations that violate health security protocols and present a risk of transmitting the virus.

In addition, the Scottish government plans to give the police new powers to separate and disperse large internal meetings. The regulations will be defined next week with the intention of coming into effect on 28 August.

Sector praises government authorization to return casinos

The Betting and Gaming Council praised the Scottish government for allowing casinos to open their doors next week, after several requests for support for the sector’s 800 or so employees. According to BGC chief executive Michael Dugher, the government deserves credit for listening to companies.

“This is welcome news and, like its colleagues in England, Scottish casinos have gone beyond what was required to ensure that they comply with all government guidelines. Scottish workers can now offer excellent service to customers and do their part for the UK’s economic recovery, ”concluded Dugher.
