Brazil is the most open market for bets on the Club World Cup

The four Brazilian representatives at the Club World Cup display master sponsors of betting houses on their uniforms. According to a survey carried out by Aposta Legal, 17 of the 32 clubs that competed in the World Cup have some type of link with sportsbooks, either with direct exposure on the shirts or institutional partnerships.

Brazilian teams (Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Palmeiras) continue to have partnerships with betting houses. In this way, Brazil is consolidating itself as the most open and active market for this type of partnership in international football.

Of this total, six teams with master sponsors come from South America. In addition to the Brazilians, the list is completed by the Argentines Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Among teams from other continents, the space for betting houses on the uniform is still more restricted.

Only Champions League runners-up Inter Milan and Porto from Portugal have a master display on their shirts. Benfica (Portugal) and Pachuca (Mexico) also display the logos of betting houses, but in secondary locations on the uniform.

Seven clubs have partnerships with betting houses, but without any visible exposure on their shirts: PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus and Auckland City.

Brazilian market is a fertile environment for bets

Brazil’s dominance in this scenario reflects the advanced stage of openness and regulation of the sector in the country. With a booming advertising market and legislation that allows brands to be displayed on uniforms, Brazilian football has become fertile ground for this type of sponsorship.

Furthermore, FIFA itself recognizes the relevance of the sector: among the nine official partner brands of the tournament is Betano, a Greek operator that has a strong presence in Brazilian football.

In other markets, legal restrictions still limit the presence of betting houses on club shirts. Furthermore, unlike the South American reality, European clubs have more robust financial structures, recurring revenues from ticket sales, broadcasting rights and presence in leagues with high commercial power.

Brazilians on the field on Friday

Two Brazilian representatives remain in the FIFA Club World Cup. Palmeiras will face Chelsea from England at 10pm next Friday in the quarter-finals of the competition. Fluminense will play on the same day, but at 4pm, against Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia, also in the quarter-finals of the competition.
