The lack of online betting apps in Apple and Google‘s online stores has caused strong discontent among betting operators in Brazil. However, since January, regulations for the sector have come into effect in the country.
Consequently, licensed companies can legally operate in the Brazilian market. However, both the Play Store and Apple Store still continue to block access to these apps. Furthermore, only Caixa Econômica Federal lottery apps are currently available for download.
In private conversations and meetings with representatives of the Ministry of Treasury, executives from betting companies expressed their frustration with the stance adopted by the technology giants. The development of official apps was expected for this year and considered essential to increase the credibility of the sector and provide greater security to users.
Veja contacted Google, which in April had reaffirmed its policy of banning betting apps from the Play Store, but the company declined to comment on whether there are plans to update its rules. Apple did not respond to the outlet’s attempts to contact it.
Online gambling executives discuss Apple and Google’s positioning
Alex Rose, CEO of betting technology provider inplaySoft, said: “Apple and Google’s current app store bans are a significant mistake. These blanket restrictions ignore the fact that dedicated mobile apps are essential for a better and, most importantly, safer player experience.”
In turn, Leonardo Henrique Roscoe Bessa, consultant to the Federal Council of the OAB and partner at Betlaw, also criticized the decision.
“The most sensible path is the joint construction of technical criteria, which allow the presence of regulated apps, with effective age verification tools, usage limits and combating addiction. Banning does not solve the problem — regulating responsibly does.”
Feliphe Almeida, CTO of LuckBet, highlighted that with official and licensed applications, bettors would be guaranteed a safe environment, while companies could explore new possibilities for interaction. In addition, he emphasizes that “it is a service that strengthens the sector and protects the consumer.”
João Fraga, CEO of Paag, emphasized that for regulation to have a real effect, the entire digital ecosystem needs to be aligned with this transformation. “Imposing barriers on licensed operators weakens the advancement of the legal market and opens space for irregular alternatives.”
“The support of large technology platforms is essential to guarantee a safe user experience. In addition, it encourages innovation and strengthens a sector that is becoming more professional in Brazil”, said the executive.
