Paquetá could be called up for selection before FA investigation ends

Coach Dorival Junior will call up the Brazilian Football Team for the first time, this Friday, March 1st. After months away, Lucas Paquetá could be called up again for the first two friendlies of the year.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has not yet decided whether it will allow Dorival Junior to include West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá on his squad list.

This is because the player is involved in an investigation into sports betting in English football.

The CBF’s decision reflects confidence in both the player and the coach. Dorival, after a recent meeting with Paquetá during a trip to England, publicly expressed his support for the player, making it clear that he sees no obstacles to his call-up.

This stance from the entity and the coach has a broader meaning. The CBF aims to avoid creating precedents that could restrict future calls under similar circumstances.

It is worth noting that the new coach of the Brazilian team will announce the players chosen for the friendlies against England and Spain. The first clash will take place on March 23rd, at Wembley, while the second will be at the Santiago Bernabéu, on the 26th.

About Lucas Paquetá’s investigation

The player is being investigated for alleged involvement in sports betting, after receiving a yellow card in a match against Aston Villa on March 12, 2023.

In the event of any development in the ongoing investigation, the option of cutting Paquetá from the team remains an alternative.

In the last call made by Fernando Diniz, the CBF had authorized Paquetá’s call. However, the coach himself chose to remain consistent with his previous position and left the player out.

While awaiting the position of the English Federation, Paquetá continues to play for his club, demonstrating professionalism and commitment despite the uncertainty regarding his return to the Brazilian team.

Furthermore, Manchester City is ready to resume negotiations with West Ham with a view to counting on Paquetá’s good football next season, as long as the investigations do not obstruct the deal again.
