Lawsuits against betting companies have increased exponentially in Brazil over the past three years. The information is part of an unprecedented survey by Predictus. The legal database found that, from 2022 to this year, 1,156 lawsuits were filed against companies in the sector in Brazilian courts. The numbers are expected to continue growing year after year.

At the beginning of the count, in 2022, 21 actions of this type were counted. However, in 2025, before the end of the first half of the year, there are already 554. The increase is 2,538%, according to Predictus.

Most of the proceedings were registered in São Paulo (291 cases), followed by Rio de Janeiro (167), Bahia (125) and Minas Gerais (119). Together, these four states account for 60% of the cases initiated during this period. In general, the incidence rate is dependent on the size of the consumer markets.

The exception is the case of Bahia, with fewer inhabitants than Minas Gerais, the high volume of processes in the state may indicate a greater propensity of its population to play games, says Predictus.

Payment issues are the most common complaints in the betting industry

The most common complaint is about prizes that are not paid or withdrawals denied, in which the bettor wins the prize on the website or app and is unable to receive it. In return, the platforms allege violations by users in order to not make the payments.

Of the more than a thousand lawsuits filed since 2022, around 80% are still ongoing. Of the 103 that were judged, according to the survey, 55% were dismissed (that is, the consumer lost) and 45% were successful (with partial or full defeats for the bookmakers). There is also a portion of 3% in which, according to Predictus, the agreements would have led to the closure of the cases.
